Cow Killers

Posted by David on Aug 20, 2008 in Nature

Ever heard of a bug called a “CowKiller”? That’s what they are commonly called here in North Carolina. Some folks call them Velvet Ants. Actually they are wingless wasps (Dasymutilla occidentalis (Linnaeus)). Anything that is red, black and female should be left alone. Get this; only the females are wingless and can sting. The males have wings but can’t sting. I’ve seen these things many times while hunting. I found the one below in my yard in Wake county, North Carolina. Rush Limbaugh

Posted by David on Aug 3, 2008 in In The News, Politics

Rush has been on the air on the EIB now for 20 years. I remember the first time I ever heard him on the radio. It was January of 1990. I would listen to the daily briefings on the radio in the office on Operation Desert Shield. A family member and others I knew were deployed in theater and I was keeping up with every little scrap of new I could find. One day after the noon news, I left the radio on and heard this guy doing a talk show. I thought he was some liberal on the radio making fun of people like me. He kept saying all these conservative ideas and I was waiting for the other show to drop and this guy would make fun of everything he was setting up. Only that didn’t happen and Rush and I have been friends ever since. Platonic of course. Congratulations Rush.
